Corrections, Probation, and Parole Officers are responsible for public safety and protection. Corrections officers work to keep prisons and jails secure so that inmates cannot escape. Minimum education requirements include a high school diploma and at least two years work experience. You must also complete a training program by the American Correctional Association.
Probation officers supervise people who have been convicted of crimes but instead of going to prison, have been allowed to stay in the community. Probation officers are responsible for keeping track of offenders and assuring that they’re meeting the requirements of their probation agreement.
Parole officers the same type of work as probation officers, but work with people who have been released from prison after serving part of their sentence. Their job is to ensure that offenders comply with the conditions of their parole.
To be successful in the Corrections, Probations and Parole field, you should be concerned about people and like helping them succeed in life without committing crimes. Good writing skills and some experience with computers would be helpful an advantage – you’ll need those skills to complete required reports.
